There is a master list of “What Is Wrong With Our Country” . I’m not sure who holds this list, but I’m pretty sure I know two of the top five.
Somewhere in the top five falls Las Vegas. If you have ever been there, you know why this falls within the top five. If you have never been there, don’t go! Do yourself a favor, and just stay put.
Also in the top five is children receiving trophies for simply being a member of a team.
I received a very upbeat email from the kids’ swim coach, detailing the following facts: 1) swim season is over and it was awesome, 2) many people were missed at the awards banquet, and 3) everyone needs to pick up their trophies, EVEN THE KIDS WHO DIDN’T COMPETE IN THE MEETS.
Now, I ask you why my kids, who only went to practice (and missed two weeks of that due to camps and vacations) deserve a trophy?
My kids did nothing exceptional. They showed up, mostly on time, and did what the coach told them to do. They simply participated at a basic, minimum level.
Want to know what also chaps my ass? The last day of swim practice was a swim-a-thon to raise money for the team. Maybe if they weren’t handing out trophies to every child that showed up and chummed the waters (mine included), and saved those for the few kids that were really outstanding, they wouldn’t need to raise so much damn money.

Comment by tallulah August 12, 2009 @ 11:25 pmAs we were cleaning out our storage unit full of years (yes way too many) we had a conversation about this very thing.
Brandon (17yrs) was looking at my 10inch trophy I was awarded when our softball team won first place in the division. He so could not get that the winning team members got such a little one and that way back then the losers got nothing.
LOL he could not get his head wrapped around the fact that a ten inch trophy was awesome and that after third place team members received nothing and that was why it was awesome.

Comment by kmilyun August 13, 2009 @ 1:05 amok.. can’t agree on Vegas cuz I love to gamble but I can’t agree more on the trophy situation. Since I’ve been dealing with this for many years (having an athlete) it just pisses me off that you can be rewarded for just showing up. When they are 5-6, even 7, okay… I see some logic in it but when you are 12? My 15 y/o.. yes, you read it right, was on a “summer basketball team” for a HIGH SCHOOL and each member of the team rec’d equal playing time in each game. I shit you not – at 15. In high school. Equal playing time…. oh, don’t get me started….
Comment by DaNell August 13, 2009 @ 8:59 amyou know how this translates into the work force? twenty-somethings expecting group hugs and cash bonuses, etc. for getting to work on time for a WHOLE WEEK! gosh! go, me!! meanwhile, their managers and the adults who were raised to think that a PAYCHECK and continued employment is reward enough for doing you mother-fucking job — ahem — shudder and twitch and wonder how the world will go on. this plucks my pubes like nothing else, well, except everything else that plucks my pubes.
